Type of article: Article
Summary
PROVIDES A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE UNDERSTANDING OF HEAT PUMP PERFORMANCE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO CARNOT'S WORK. DISCUSSES THE APPLICATION OF THE FIRST AND SECOND LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS. EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE COP, THE SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS AND THE HEAT PUMP. STRESSES THAT ENERGY CAN BE REGARDED AS A DUAL PROPERTY CONSISTING OF BOTH COMBINATIVE ENERGY AND ENTHALPY AND TO FULLY EVALUATE AN ENERGY, THE CONTENTS OF BOTH REGISTERS MUST BE EXAMINED. CONCLUDES IT IS TIME TO DE-CARNOTISE THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT ENERGY IN GENERAL. (INT. BUILD. SERV. ABSTR., GB., 20, N.5, 1985, 8-9, 85-01456.
