Summary

The use of R-23 (GWP100=12690) in ultra-low temperature (ULT) applications is currently an exception to the EU F-Gas Regulation No. 517/2014, but has been subject to significant price increases and limited availability in recent years and increased pressure on users has begun its phase out from use. At the same time, development and investigation of alternative refrigerants show promising alternatives to R-23, as well as their respective challenges. Such challenges include system reliability, ability to reach a wide range of application temperatures, and limited installation space. The objective of this work is to investigate the system behavior of an environmental test chamber for R-23 retrofitted with R-473A, a promising alternative to R-23 with a GWP100 of 1800. The temperature range of the chamber is +180 °C to -75 °C. Experimental investigations in this application area focus on the evaluation of the temperature pull-down performance and the minimum temperature reached in the chamber. This work presents the experimental results of an improved prototype test chamber that has been fitted for R-473A based on the knowledge gained from initial tests. System performance is evaluated based on pull-down time (DIN EN 60068-3-5) and the effects of the retrofit improvement on the vapor compression process are discussed. Finally, further system adaptations for R-473A are suggested.
