Experimental investigation of an alternating evaporator duty refrigerator/freezer.

Summary

A bistable solenoid valve has been used to build an alternating evaporator duty domestic refrigerator/freezer. This refrigerator has two vapor compression refrigeration loops that share a common compressor, condenser, and suction line heat exchanger. Each of the refrigeration loops has an expansion devive and evaporator. One evaporator is located in the fresh food compartment and the other is located in the freezer compartment. Only one of the two compartments is cooled at any given time. With this configuration, the food compartment is cooled at a higher evaporator temperature than the freezer. Due to this, the energy efficiency of the refrigerator is improved by 8.5% over a conventional domestic refrigerator/freezer.
