Experimental investigation of the chemical stability and the system performance with cyclopropane as refrigerant.

Author(s) : ROGSTAM J.

Summary

Previous investigations have shown that cyclopropane (RC270) is more energy efficient than R12 and R600a. RC270 is a cyclic compound. Stability tests have been performed on a laboratory basis with "sealed tube tests" and long term application tests. A slight growth of simple hydrocarbons, such as methane and ethane was observed. The simple hydrocarbon contents stabilised after around 100 days of continuous running time, and still is stable after 700 days of running. Commercial household freezers have been tested according to a standard test procedure with RC270. Both RC270 and R600a showed an increase in energy consumption compared to R12, but RC270 is expected to be more energy (a decreased heat exchange between the capillary tube and the suction line, due to restriction adjustment, explains the slightly poorer performance in this case).
