Hydrocarbon refrigerants for domestic and commercial refrigeration appliances.

Author(s) : AGARWAL R. S.

Summary

Hydrocarbons, especially isobutane and the blends of propane and isobutane, have been identified as one of the leading alternative refrigerants for domestic refrigerators and small capacity appliances. They have zero ODP, negligible GWP and are compatible with mineral lubricating oils. They also possess excellent thermodynamic properties. Hydrocarbon refrigerants, in comparison to CFC-12, have high latent heat of vapourization and low value of density. This makes these refrigerants attractive, inspite of their high flammability, and because of low charge and circulation rate. The charge levels are approximately 40% that of CFC-12.
