Summary

This paper presents the experimental and simulation study of a multifunctional air source heat pump device, which combined a residential air conditioner with a heat pump water heater. Experiments on a laboratory made prototype unit indicate that the system ran well in different working models with a reasonable EER, from 3.2 to 1.4 with temperatures of supplied water from 40 to 60°C; a variation of EER, from 3.0 to 1.5 when heating 60-litre water in water tank from 9 to 53°C. Model simulation is carried out as well in different working conditions and results basically agree with the experiment. To enhance the overall performance of this system further, improvements on the water-cooled condenser and the system are proposed according to simulation results.
