Summary

The paper deals with development and study of a new method of change of natural physical and mechanical properties of ice based on using polymeric compounds as a molecular “instrument” for artificial reconstruction of its crystal structure. A mechanism of impact of microdoses of polymers introduced during water film crystallization process and formation of the ordered cellular structure with a typical size between “hubs“is described. The size between hubs is defined by the macromolecules construction of compounds introduced, by their length, molecular mass and concentration in solution. Main directions of changes of ice natural properties for different sports were defined. They are: minimization of resistance to sliding, artificial increase in solid and elastic and plastic properties. For the first time the problem of visualization of ice structures modified by different polymeric compounds was resolved. The pictures obtained when studying ice samples using a solution cryoelectronic microscope are presented. The pictures confirmed the presence of an artificially introduced regular ice structure and allowed defining a typical size of crystalline grains, their form and mutual disposition when different groups of polymers are introduced together. Also the influence of concentration of substances introduced on parameters of the structure obtained was defined. On the base of data obtained, the technology of ice cover with predictable physical and mechanic properties was developed. The experiments on model equipment and with groups of sportsmen allowed establishing interaction of parameters of the crystalline structure obtained with speed, solid, elastic and plastic and optical properties. A series of pictures that allows observing the effect of filling cracks, appeared in ice, with liquid from the space between grains as well as stopping further development of cracks is presented. The paper offers to use the method of ice crystalline structure visualization to control gas phase content. The authors made a comparative analysis of crystalline structure of the modified ice with a piece of ice extracted from 1.5 m deep on the Northern Pole, which lacks the bounds of grains and which has some isolated air inclusions.
