Summary
The F-gas Regulation No 517/2014 and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer are two actions taken to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP). Among the HFCs, R134a, which has a GWP100years equal to 1530, is recognized in the IPCC as a major contributor and its atmospheric abundances increased by 71 % from 2011 to 2019. This work presents an experimental study on drop-in replacements to R134a in a water-to-water chiller equipped with large scroll compressors. Several low-GWP alternatives to R134a have been considered: R1234ze(E), R516A, R450A and R513A. The experimental tests have been conducted by fixing the inlet/outlet water temperatures in the chiller rather than fixing the condensing and evaporating temperature. The results in terms of cooling capacity and coefficient of performance are analysed and compared against those obtained with R134a. Moreover, the volumetric efficiency and the global isentropic efficiency of the compressor are presented and models to predict the compressor performance are assessed.
