Extension of a pool boiling based correlation to flow boiling of mixtures.

Author(s) : WINTERTON R.

Summary

The basic method of prediction for pool boiling was described by Stephan and Korner, starting with predictions for the pure fluids. Work by the group at Birmingham has produced a prediction method for single component flow boiling, starting with the pool boiling expression of Cooper. Since the method separates the nucleate and forced convection terms the obvious way to extend the method to flow boiling of mixtures is to use the Stephan and Korner approach for the pool boiling term and use mixture properties for the forced convection term. The method is applied, without further change or any fitting to data for mixtures, to the 50:50 ethylene glycol/water mixture. Details of the calculation and properties needed are given as well as the results, compared with literature data.
