Extension of an empirical method for estimating refrigeration system energy usage to new refrigerants.

Summary

A simple yet accurate refrigeration system energy use estimation method has been extended to a number of new refrigerants (HFC-123, HFC-125, HFC-143a, HFC-152a, R290, R507 and R600a). The calculation method requires only the use of four empirically determined coefficients for each refrigerant and two algebraic equations. The proposed coefficients apply across ranges of conditions commonly encountered in industrial and commercial refrigeration. Testing against system energy balance calculations using published thermodynamic data routines showed that for those refrigerants which are used closest to their critical temperature the errors are at worst more or less 10%, but for other refrigerants the accuracy is within more or less 5%. The empirical method may provide energy use estimates of sufficient accuracy for a number of applications, whilst retaining the advantage of calculation simplicity.
