A RAPID EMPIRICAL METHOD FOR ESTIMATION OF ENERGY SAVINGS RESULTING FROM REFRIGERATION PLANT ALTERATIONS.

Author(s) : CLELAND A. C.

Summary

MANY COOLING SYSTEMS WERE DESIGNED TO MEET A LOW CAPITAL COST CRITERION. IT IS OFTEN CONVENIENT TO MODIFY SUCH PLANTS TO REDUCE OPERATING COSTS, PARTICULARLY WITH RESPECT TO ENERGY CONSUMPTION. A SIMPLE CALCULATION METHOD IS PRESENTED, BASED ON AN EMPIRICAL FORMULA FOR CALCULATION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION. THIS METHOD CAN BE APPLIED NOT ONLY FOR ANALYZING CHANGES IN EXISTING PLANTS BUT ALSO TO PREDICT THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE DESIGNS WHEN A NEW PLANT IS BEING CONSIDERED. TESTS ON THE PROPOSED METHOD FOR R12, R22, R502, R114 AND R717 SHOWED THAT IT PREDICTS WITHINPLUS OR MINUS 3.4% (WITH A 95% LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE) THE PERFORMANCES OF THE PROCEDURES COMMONLY USED IN THE INDUSTRY.
