Summary

This article presents a heat pump using the warmth of grey-water at approximately 30°C, as heat source to produce domestic hot water (DHW) at 60°C. It presents the concept and the optimization of the overall effectiveness of the system. Grey-water, from the kitchens, bathrooms and washing machines is stored in a tank at atmospheric pressure so that energy is stored for later use. The system is designed to operate during off-peak hours of the electricity tariff (to ensure the production of hot water for two reasons: the first is to reduce operating costs; the second is to limit CO2 emissions, taking into account higher emissions in the production of electricity during peak hours. An exergy analysis was conducted to optimize the energy efficiency of the process. Entropy generation in heat pump is reduced using an optimal refrigerant mixture as working fluid and by installing a static heat exchanger upstream of the evaporator. In addition, a new concept of hot water storage is designed to avoid mixing hot and cold water in the tank to reduce the entropy generation during hot water drawn off. One of the results of the study is that the annual average COP of the system of production of hot water at 60°C is approximately 6.4 for grey-water of approximately 30°C.
