Summary

STATIONARY MILK COOLERS, IMMERSION COOLERS AND MOBILE CHILLED-WATER TANKS WERE INSPECTED ON 357 FARMS. OF STATIONARY COOLERS 8% WERE UNSATISFACTORY ; MOST COMMON FAULTS WERE ASSOCIATED WITH ELECTRONIC CONTROLS, AGITATION SYSTEMS AND REFRIGERANT LEAKS. COOLERS FROM ONE MANUFACTURER APPEARED TO BE PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ELECTRONIC DEFECTS. ALL ICE-BANK COOLERS CONFORMED TO COOLING SPECIFICATIONS BUT 22.3% OF DIRECT-EXPANSION COOLERS DID NOT. 10% OF STATIONARY COOLERS WERE INCAPABLE OF HOLDING PEAK MILK SUPPLY. OF THE IMMERSION COOLERS, HALF WERE ONLY CAPABLE OF PARTIAL REFRIGERATION OF THE MILK SUPPLY WITHIN THE SPECIFIED COOLING TIME, JUST OVER ONE QUARTER WERE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED AND ONE THIRD WERE OPERATING UNDER SUB-OPTIMUM CONDITIONS, MAINLY BECAUSE OF FOULING OF CONDENSERS WITH DUST OR DAMAGE TO FINS.
