Summary

HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED FOR A BINARY REFRIGERANT (MIXTURES OF R12-R114 AND R11-R114) VAPOUR CONDENSATION ON AN HORIZONTAL TUBE CONTAINED IN A CLOSED VESSEL, THE EXPERIMENTS BEING CARRIED OUT OVER A WIDE RANGE OF MASS FRACTIONS FOR EACH COMPONENT. THE CONDENSATE FOR THE R11-R114 MIXTURE REVEALED A RING-WISE FILM ON THE TUBE WHEN THE MASS FRACTION FOR R114 WAS BETWEEN 0.3 AND 0.8 AT A MODERATE HEAT FLUX DENSITY. WHEN THE HEAT FLUX INCREASED THE FILM TOOK ON A SMOOTH FEATURE, CHANGED TO A TURBULENT RING-WISE FORMATION WHICH GRADUALLY BECAME FAINTER AND RETURNED TO A SMOOTH FORMATION. THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS FOR THE SMOOTH FILM AGREE WELL WITH THOSE PREDICTED BY EQUATIONS, BUT THE COEFFICIENTS FOR THE TURBULENT RING-WISE FILM ARE 50% HIGHER THAN THE PREDICTED VALUES.
