Summary

The implementation of a compact heat exchanger in sorption systems is a key factor in allowing the development of these systems in the field of solar air conditioning, for which the compactness and the investment cost are crucial criteria. Different phenomena limit the performances of the evaporators using water as refrigerant: the very low density of the vapour phase that leads to high velocities, large bubble diameters which could dry out the heat exchange area, head losses that shift the operating point and require lower temperature sources. Hence, the conception of a compact evaporator implies being able to characterize these different phenomena in order to get a proper design. As the plate heat exchanger is a promising technology, an experimental study of water vaporization occurring on a plate has been initiated to do investigations. A test bench has been designed and built in order to characterize the evaporation flow regimes from a macroscopic point of view with constant or varying flow rates. The paper describes the test bench in details and the first experimental results are analyzed.
