IIR document

Flammable refrigerants and safety standards.

Author(s) : ENGSTRÖM B.

Summary

In 1994, Sweden proposed that the existing "Paricular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, IEC 60335-2-40 " (IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission), should also include appliances with flammable refrigerants. Today, the work is carried out within the IEC, with the objective to describe the safety aspects. A standard to comply with, for producing appliances, to install and to use them in such a safe way that the risks are not higher than appliances with "ordingary" refrigerants. The current status of the IEC-work and, if started, the status within CENELEC, the equivalent European organisation, will be given. Due to differences between the member countries, there are a lot of different opinions on the mater. It is of great importance that many countries participate in the work.
