Hydrocarbon refrigerant safety: standards and quantitative risk assessments.

Author(s) : COLBOURNE D., RITTER T. J.

Summary

Various safety considerations are discussed. Various national and international safety standards are mentioned. A number of independent quantitative risk assessments commissioned by a society for a variety of different applications are assessed with the calculated frequencies of fires and fatalities in respect to the use of flammable refrigerants. Results from these assessments are contrasted against background risks, existing statistics for liquefied petroleum gas appliances and the actual performance of a hydrocarbon charged freezer in a fire situation as a basis for comparison.
