Summary

In Swiss legislation, food spoilage is dealt with in identical qualitative as well as in quantitative terms with different levels of minimal requirements. The term food spoilage is used in different areas of the legislation, ranging from health protection to fraud. Contaminants are also included as well as a decrease in value of the food item or exterior alterations as a marker of spoilage. Involved are the food law, the food ordinance, the ordinance of food hygiene and the ordinance of foreign and inherent components in food. However, clear definitions of the terms and synonyms used are lacking.
