Summary

The Food Refrigeration and Computerised Food Technology Research Group (FRCFT) is one of the biggest research teams in the National University of Ireland, Dublin (UCD). The Group undertakes research projects funded by the EU, Enterprise Ireland, Teagasc, Department of Agriculture and Food and the food industry. FRCFT is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities including a food refrigeration laboratory which the biggest in Ireland, a food quality assurance laboratory, a cold chain systems laboratory, and a computer vision laboratory. Research in FRCFT is further enhanced by the advanced research equipment available in the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering and the Food science Centre in UCD, and the Irish National Food Centre. Every year, FRCFT publishes many refereed papers cited by SCI. In 2000, over 40 papers have been published, 13 of which are refereed journal papers. These papers cover various research topics including cooling, drying and refrigeration processes and systems for foods and agricultural products, computer vision systems, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), mathematical modelling and computer simulation, and process enhancement technology. In this paper, the latest results in food refrigeration in FRCFT are summarised and presented, for sharing research interests and promoting wider collaboration with the international community.
