Summary

FREEZING PHENOMENA IN A HORIZONTAL COOLING CYLINDER WERE EXAMINED EXPERIMENTALLY TO MEASURE THE SHAPE AND AMOUNT OF THE FREEZING LAYER AND HEAT TRANSFER RATE ON THE ICE-WATER INTERFACE. THE LOCAL HEAT TRANSFER RATES ON THE ICE-WATER INTERFACE WERE CALCULATED BY THE TEMPERATURE FIELD IN THE ICE LAYER USING A POINT-MATCHING METHOD. USEFUL CORRELATION EQUATIONS WERE DERIVED FOR THE FROZEN LAYER AND THE TOTAL QUANTITY OF COOLING CAPACITY STORED IN THE ICE LAYER AND THE AVERAGE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT OF THE ICE-WATER INTERFACE.
