Summary

A NOVEL ADSORPTION FREEZE-DRYING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED AND COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL FREEZE-DRYING EQUIPMENT. THE DRIER IS SAID TO OPERATE AT A HIGHER TEMPERATURE AND REQUIRES SIGNIFICANTLY LESS ENERGY. THE POROUS STRUCTURE OF THE DESICCANT ADSORBS WATER AS VAPOUR, DETERIORATING GRADUALLY AND IS EASILY REGENERATED BY HEAT AFTER THE CYCLE. SOME DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TRIALS WITH VARIOUS PRODUCTS AND COST COMPARISONS ARE GIVEN FOR A CONVENTIONAL AND ADSORPTION DRYER, THE LATTER BEING 53% LESS IN CAPITAL TERMS AND 56% LESS IN OPERATING TERS G.
