Future impacts of biotechnology on agriculture, food production and food processing: a Delphi survey. Executive summary.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

The paper presents the results of an European survey concerning the future use of biotechnologies in the production of food. The survey was performed through more than 7000 experts of five European countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy and Spain). The results show that Mediterranean countries are roughly more optimistic than the others, but all countries strongly think that further research programs have to be involved, that the development will take a very long time and that ecological and ethical issues have to be found, and that the implementations taking firstly place in the pharmaceutical and health fields, are slower in the food industry.
