THE AUTHORS FIRSTLY REVIEW THE VARIOUS SHIP TYPES AND GIVE DETAILS OF SOME OF THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS TAKING PLACE FOR SPECIFIC TYPES OF SHIP. THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF ULTRA-LARGE CRUDE CARRIERS IS THEN DISCUSSED AND THE DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR SUCH VESSELS IS OUTLINED. THE INTERRELATION BETWEEN COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL A PROGRAMMES AS DEVELOPED BY THE CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES IS STRESSED, AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS WITH THE EMPHASIS ON SAFETY CONCLUDE THE ARTICLE.
