Summary

THE MAGNETORESISTANCE, HALL COEFFICIENT AND MAGNETOTHERMO-EMF OF OSMIUM SINGLE CRYSTALS ARE MEASURED IN MAGNETIC FIELDS UP TO 90 KILOOERSTED AT A TEMPERATURE OF 4.2 K. IN MAGNETIC FIELDS ABOVE 50 KILOOERSTED SHUBNIKOV TYPE QUANTUM OSCILLATIONS OF THE THERMO-EMF ARE OBSERVED AND INVESTIGATED. IT IS FOUND THAT IN OSMIUM, IN CONTRAST TO ITS ELECTRON ANALOG, RUTHENIUM, THE FERMI SURFACE DOES NOT POSSESS OPEN DIRECTIONS ALONG THE HEXAGONAL AXIS. THE POSSIBILITY OF MAGNETIC BREAKDOWN IN THE METAL IS DISCUSSED.
