General properties and characteristics of aqueous solutions used in indirect systems.
Author(s) : MELINDER Å.
Summary
With indirect refrigeration systems it is possible to minimize the refrigerant charge and leakage as the primary unit with refrigerant circuit can be factory made. There is however a need to find a suitable secondary working fluid (secondary refrigerant, coolant). Aqueous solutions of ethylene and propylene glycols, ethyl alcohol and a number of chlorides and potassium salts are used as secondary fluids. The thermophysical properties have been much examined. When determining which secondary fluid to use in a particular application, close attention should also be given to general properties and characteristics of the fluid, such as flammability, leakage tendency, material compatibility and corrosion, health and toxicity, environmental pollution and handling security. The paper considers these aspects and through tables and charts show how the fluid types compare as to flash point, boiling point, vapour pressure and surface tension, electric conductance and pH-value. These properties may give an indication of flammability, tendencies of leakage, cavitation of pumps and whether the fluid will give cause to any corrosion problems. All fluids have some drawbacks and there is a need to examine carefully the product information and safety sheets available for the commercial products.
