Summary
Limited reserves of fossil, fuels, constant rise of oil prices, striving for lower power dependence, endeavours of world institutions to reduce the greenhouse gas emission as well as technological development are the main factors in making decision on application of renewable power resources. One of these resources, geothermal water, with a temperature up to 180°C in tectonically still areas such as in the Republic of Croatia, was discovered during carrying out of mining works aimed at exploration of hydrocarbons. The use of geothermal water at the time of its discovery 20 years ago, could only be attributed to the enthusiasm of individuals. At present, the exploitation of geothermal water in the world is more significant in various applications. During production of geothermal water, large quantities of thermal energy are available that could be used for production of electric power as well as in various heating and cooling processes in industry, and in dependence on water chemical composition, in balneology. Wide applicability and possibility of gradual exploitation of geothermal water are of special interest for the economic development of areas where that resource is located. It could be stated that under such circumstances, oil companies aware of the fluid type, and having an enormous experience in oil, gas and water exploration and production, have a significant role in development of geothermal projects. Revitalization of such projects would bring to local communities substantial advantages in all economy brunches that could be of special interest for less developed countries. In the Republic of Croatia, with the participation of INA Oil Company, several major projects for gradual exploitation of geothermal water that will surely provide for the economic growth of areas rich in that energy resource are presently considered.
