Summary

THE APPLICATION OF ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS FOR DOMESTIC SPACE HEATING AND COOLING IS RAPIDLY INCREASING IN JAPAN ; THE USE OF HEAT PUMP/COOLING SYSTEMS ROSE BY MORE THAN 50% IN 1983. CONSIDERING THE PERFORMANCE OF HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS, THERE ARE STILL SOME PROBLEMS REGARDING CAPACITY REDUCTION AT LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, DEFROSTING AND HIGH TEMPERATURE HEATING PERFORMANCE, ETC, BUT THESE PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. HISTORY OF HEAT PUMPS SYSTEMS IN JAPAN, PROBLEMS WITH PRESENT SYSTEMS AND FACTORS AFFECTING PERFORMANCE ARE GIVEN IN THIS PAPER. NEW SYSTEMS SUCH AS GAS ENGINE DRIVEN HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS AND CHEMICAL HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED.
