Summary

A double-effect, two-stage heat pump running on lithium bromide is described that produces cold on one side and heat at two different temperatures on the other. The operation of the exchangers can be modified with a simple set of valves. The installation, located in Munich, has at its disposal a groundwater source at 10 deg C, which supplies thermal energy for winter heating. An automatic monitoring and control system helps optimize the distribution among the three sources of heat. The COP is as high as 1.65 for a heat-pump output of 600 kilowatts. J.L.
