Summary
THE PAPER DEALS WITH TURBULENT FLOW OF WATER IN LAYER FORM DOWN THE WALL OF A VERTICAL TUBE. THE TUBE HEATS THE FLOWING WATER AND THE EXPERIMENTS INCLUDE REYNOLDS NUMBER OF THE FILM UP TO ABOUT 25,000. THE FILM TEMPERATURES OF THE WATER HAVE BEEN IN THE RANGE OF 278 TO 288 K (5 TO 15 DEG C). EXPERIMENTS WERE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE PRIMARILY THE COEFFICIENT OF HEAT TRANSFER. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE CORRELATED QUITE WELL WITH THE EQUATION BY MCADAMS. FOR PRACTICAL CALCULATIONS THE EQUATIONS CAN BE CONSIDERABLY SIMPLIFIED IF ONE ASSUMES THAT THE FILM TEMPERATURE IS CONSTANT. ALL THERMAL PROPERTIES OF THE LIQUID CAN BE INCLUDED IN ONE CONSTANT, K. VALUES FOR THIS CONSTANT FOR WATER OF DIFFERENT FILM TEMPERATURES ARE GIVEN.
