Heat transfer modeling of PCM thermal storage at cryogenic temperatures.
Number: 0004

Summary
The presented research suggests a dynamic numerical model of a phase change material (PCM) thermal energy storage unit, where the PCM exchanges heat with a fluid. A cold fluid flow is used to solidify the PCM, and a hot fluid flow in the same passages is later used to melt the PCM. The model is suitable for a tube-in-tube-shaped heat exchanger, where the PCM can be in the inner tube and the fluid in the gap between the tubes, or vice versa. The model is fully parametric and allows the investigation of various dimensions, construction materials, working materials, and operating conditions. Aiming for thermal energy storage units at cryogenic temperatures, the model allows the investigation of different insulation techniques to obtain suitable heat leaks to the surroundings. It also determines the energy losses during storage time as a function of the storage duration and ambient conditions. The model is implemented in the finite differences method and provides the dynamics of the phase change in the PCM and the temperature distribution in the entire unit. The presented model is used to investigate different designs of the thermal energy storage unit and to determine the appropriate operating conditions to obtain the highest efficiency, which is defined as the ratio between the amount of energy which is provided by the unit and the amount of energy that is charged to the unit.
