Summary

THE ABILITY OF VARIOUS CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENTS TO PENETRATE AND CRYOPROTECT THE BRAINS OF RATS AND RABBITS WAS EXAMINED. GLYCEROL APPEARED TO PENETRATE FREELY INTO THE RABBIT BRAIN AND WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT HISTOLOGICAL CRYOPROTECTION. ONLY PROPYLENE GLYCOL AND METHANOL PENETRATED THE RAT BRAIN ADEQUATELY, BUT RAT BRAIN CELLS APPEARED WELL PRESERVED EVEN IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENT.
