Summary

The article deals with the running costs of an air-conditioning plant with thermal storage in the presence of time-dependent charges for electric energy. The possibility was investigated of meeting heating requirements in winter by using the refrigerating plant, sized as required by cooling loads, as a reversible heat-pump system. Numerical simulations were performed on three typical office buildings in order to find the optimal operation of the plant; reference is made to climatic data and energy rates comparable to Italy's. Significant savings in energy costs (up to 53%) are reported when the operation conforms to the criterion of not increasing the charge for electric power demand over that required by the amount of cooling loads.
