Summary

Evolution in strawberry growing techniques has led researchers to study the needs of strawberry plants in terms of cold with respect to dormancy. A method of evaluating needs was developed and led to classification of the main varieties grown. Means of compensating for insufficiently cold conditions were studied. Artificial refrigeration (using transit periods in a refrigerator) can be used for winter varieties of large plants. Artificial lighting can prevent symptoms of dormancy. Management of these elements can be performed according to the amount of refrigeration used but should be used only under extreme conditions.
