HVAC-R industry dynamic stakeholder mapping: a proposal for policymakers, NGOs, and manufacturers alike.

Number: 0162

Author(s) : BIBALOU D.

Summary

The HVAC-R industry is fragmented. It relies on a global supply chain, thus making it difficult for insiders and outsiders alike to grasp its structure. For over 40 years, stakeholder analysis, a technique rooted in policy, management, and international development, has addressed this need for clarity. However, few publications address the HVAC-R industry; therefore, this paper aims to present such an application within the European context with global relevance. That is by switching between the micro-level, where one can identify specific actors, for example, a company, and the macro-level, where one should see groupings like trade associations. The mapping's dynamic dimension stems from the customisable weighting assigned to a pair of criteria plotted on an orthogonal coordinate system. These criteria pairs are as follows: mission impact against the funding ability (relevant to not-for-profit organisations) or influence against the ability to contribute to an organisation's bottom line (applicable to for-profit organisations). This paper provides a short stakeholder analysis development review, suggests some groupings with their justifications, and looks at a European example. This paper aims to formalise the implicit heuristics most experienced HVAC-R professionals use. Similarly, it could be used for newcomers' inductions. Therefore, for improvement purposes, this work would benefit from the "wisdom of the crowd"; these are the members.
