Summary
In FY2004, NEDO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), created a roadmap that set a 2030 reduction target for fluorinated gas substitute emissions. This roadmap lists technology development themes to be carried out chronologically from the present to the year 2030 to mitigate climate change, and clarifies the interrelation among technologies and the sequence of technology development. There are a variety of targeted fields, including refrigerants (industrial refrigeration/air-conditioning equipment, automotive air conditioners, residential air conditioners, etc.), insulation foaming agents (rigid urethane foam materials, expanded polystyrene, etc.), electrical insulating gases, processing and cleaning gases for manufacturing semiconductors and LCDs, aerosol propellants, cover gases for melting magnesium, etc. Refrigeration and air conditioning equipment will be the focus of this paper, Technology Strategy Map 2009: Measures to Promote the Use of Non-fluorinated Gases. NEDO's efforts to reduce emissions of fluorinated gas and fluorinated gas substitutes, as well as the results of these efforts, will be discussed.
