THE ART OF ICE CREAM MAKING WAS BROUGHT BY MARCO POLO FROM CHINA TO ITALY IN THE 14TH CENTURY. THE 1ST SETTLERS TOOK IT ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO NORTHERN AMERICA, WHERE INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURE DEVELOPED IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. THE USA HAS THE HIGHEST PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION OF ICE CREAM (22.6 L IN 1979), FOLLOWED BY AUSTRALIA (21 L). SWEDEN IN 5TH PLACE IN THE WORLD WITH 12.8 L, IS THE FIRST IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.
