Summary

Two new ice rinks have been designed for Minnesota, USA. One, an indoor rink is finished, the other, an outdoor rink, is nearing completion. The latter includes a 400 m oval for international speed skating superimposed on a 65 m x 100 m rink suitable for ice hockey or a new sport called bandy. The outdoor rink is cooled by calcium chloride brine pumped through plastic piping covered by only 50 mm of concrete with welded wire fabric reinforcement. Refrigeration is from an ammonia plant with flooded evaporator, evaporative condenser, and three single screw compressors. The article describes difficulties involved with expansion joints, pipe laying and fixing, and stresses the enormous size of the project. D.W.H.
