Summary

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE IMPAIRMENT OF THE DEXTERITY OF WORKERS IN ROOMS AT A TEMPERATURE RANGING BETWEEN 243 AND 283 K (-30 AND 10 DEG C). 57 SUBJECTS WERE TWICE SUBMITTED TO THE BOLT TEST WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS TRAINING ; ONCE AT THEIR WORKPLACE IN A COLD ENVIRONMENT AND ANOTHER IN A ROOM AT NORMAL TEMPERATURE. THE THRESHOLD OF THE BACK OF THE HAND SUPERFICIAL SKIN TEMPERATURE AT WHICH DEXTERITY IS AFFECTED RANGES BETWEEN 296 AND 297 K (23 AND 24 DEG C). THE FACT THAT THE STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT ONLY IN FIRMS RESULTS IN SPECIFIC TEST CONDITIONS AS SOME FACTORS CANNOT BE CONTROLLED DIRECTLY. THE VALIDITY OF THE TESTS IS DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE LITERATURE.
