Important considerations when converting R11 turbo refrigerating machines to R123.

Summary
The often expressed opinion that for conversions from R11 to R123 only the oil and gaskets (and, with hermetic machines, the motor) need to be changed is true only if refrigerating performance, economical operation and partial-load behaviour are not considered. Loss in refrigerating performance, for example, can sometimes be over 20 %. R123, moreover, is slightly toxic, and tests have not yet been completed on its long-term toxicity. And R123 machines need 10 to 17 % more energy than R11 machines. The author gives some suggestions for figuring the optimum operating capacity for one's own case. M.C.
