Summary

Two examples are given, a change from R11 to R123, and from R12 to R134a. In the former drop-in replacement is possible when elastomer gaskets and seals have been replaced. In an old plant capacity may be reduced and specific power increased. Changing from R12 to R134a is less simple. The increase in head requirement means a higher impellor speed, thus an unwanted increase in volume flow. Reducing capacity brings the possibility of an unstable operating point. Again elastomers need changing, also the lubricating oil must be replaced by one with an ester base. Two R11 to R123 conversions are reported and one R12 to R134a. D.W.H.
