Improving the performance of an air to water heat pump by the optimised selection of the outdoor air-coil.

Author(s) : ROBERTS L., GREEN R.

Summary

An area where system designers can have a major impact on the energy performance of a heat pump, is in the design of the heat exchangers, and in particular the design of the outdoor air coil. A theoretical study was undertaken into the interaction of air coil size and system performance which showed that there is an optimum heat exchanger size that will give the best overall COP. The work reported here extends the theoretical study to a practical demonstration of how the performance of a small commercially available air to water heat pump was improved (12% improvement).
