Summary

A GAS-FIRED AIR-TO-WATER AMMONIA-WATER HEAT PUMP FOR SPACE HEATING PURPOSES IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT. SPECIAL EMPHASIS IS LAID ON THE INTERNAL CONTROL, IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE THE HEAT RATIO UNDER VARYING WORKING CONDITIONS. TWO OF THE 3 EXISTING DEGREES OF FREEDOM DO NOT REQUIRE ANY AUTOMATIC CONTROL. THE THIRD DEGREE OF FREEDOM, THE LIQUID AMMONIA FLOW TO THE EVAPORATOR, HOWEVER, HAS TO BE CONTROLLED. A SELF-OPTIMIZING CONTROL STRATEGY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED, THAT MAXIMIZES THE HEAT RATIO BY MEASURING THE TEMPERATURES AROUND THE PRECOOLER. THE STRATEGY HAS BEEN TESTED ON A PROTOTYPE ABSORPTION HEAT PUMP, WITH GOOD RESULTS. A COST ESTIMATION SHOWS THAT THECONTROLLER AND THE ELECTRICALLY CONTROLLED EXPANSION VALVE TOGETHER ARE CHEAPER THAN A THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE.
