In-flight temperature conditions in the holds of an widebody aircraft.

Summary

Air temperature was measured in the holds of a Boeing 747-400 combi in order to evaluate the suitability of in-flight conditions for the transport of horticultural commodities such as fruits, vegetables or flowers. Mapping results showed a great difference between temperature settings and actual measurements. Therefore, frost occurrence, high temperature, uneven and variable conditions of the heating systems affected the temperature distribution. Results of this study also showed that some horticultural products may be damaged depending on their locations in the cargo hold.
