Summary

A TEST PLANT FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CONCERNING GROUND COUPLED HEAT PUMPS WITH VERTICAL GROUND HEAT EXCHANGERS WAS IN OPERATION NEAR WETZLAR, GERMANY, BETWEEN 1985 AND 1989. DURING HEAT EXTRACTION TESTS BETWEEN 1986 AND 1988, 12 SAMPLES OF 5 DIFFERENT MATERIALS WERE EXPOSED TO GROUND WATER IN A 50 M DEEP WELL. IN THE ARTICLE THE MASS LOSS DUE TO CORROSION, AS WELL AS THE CHEMISTRY OF THE GROUND WATER, ARE PRESENTED. THE INVESTIGATION SHOWS THAT PURE IRON, WHEN IN CONTACT WITH GROUND WATER, WILL LOSE HALF OF ITS MASS IN APPROXIMATELY 30 YEARS. ONLY INOX STEEL OR PLASTIC (EG HIGH-DENSITY-POLYETHYLENE), ARE DURABLE ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY BEING USED AS A GROUND HEAT EXCHANGER.
