INFLUENCE OF BUOYANCY ON THE VERTICAL FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER IN A SHROUDED FIN ARRAY.

Summary

THE AUTHORS INVESTIGATED THE CASE OF A LONGITUDINAL FIN ARRAY ON A FLAT BASE MOUNTED VERTICALLY AND WITH A FLAT SHROUD SHEET OVER THE FREE EDGES OF THE FINS. FLOW WAS CONSIDERED TO BE WITH THE NATURAL BUOYANCY, IE UPWARD FOR HEATING THE FLOW FLUID, DOWNWARD FOR COOLING. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BUOYANCY FORCE INCREASES THE FLOW OVER THE FINS BUT OPPOSES IT IN THE CLEARANCE SPACE BETWEEN THE FIN EDGE AND THE SHROUD. AT A CRITICAL RAYLEIGH NUMBER, THE RETARDATION OF FLOW IN THE CLEARANCE SPACE CAN CAUSE A REVERSAL IN THE TOTAL FLOW. SOLUTIONS ARE PUBLISHED UP TO THE CRITICAL RAYLEIGH NUMBER, FOR DIFFERENT CLEARANCE AND FIN SPACING DIMENSIONS. D.W.H.
