INFLUENCE OF CHILLING AND FREEZING ON SEED QUALITY AND GERMINABILITY.

INFLUENCE DE LA REFRIGERATION ET DE LA CONGELATION SUR LA QUALITE ET L'APTITUDE A LA GERMINATION DES GRAINES.

Author(s) : COME D.

Summary

SEEDS ARE MOSTLY HIGHLY DEHYDRATED. THE PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN THEIR STORAGE ARE THEREFORE VERY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE APPLIED TO OTHER PLANT ORGANS. LOW TEMPERATURES PREVENT THEIR GERMINATION DURING STORAGE, LIMIT THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY PARASITES AND PROLONG THEIR VIABILITY. SOME SEEDS CAN ONLY GERMINATE AFTER COLD TREATMENT IN A WET MEDIUM. SEEDS IMPERMEABLE TO WATER BECOME ABLE TO GERMINATE EASILY AFTER TREATMENT AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURES.
