Summary
The cut flowers of rose cv. Noblesse were pre-cooled by spraying the cut flowers for 45 minutes at 3-minute intervals with ice-cold water (2 °C plus or minus) or storage of cut flowers at 4 °C for 24 hours. The cut flowers pre-cooled with ice-cold water spray were pulsed with 2% DMSO for 15 minutes of 3% D-fructose + 150 ppm 8-HQC for 24 hours. The cut flowers under cool storage were pulsed simultaneously. The vase water on the first to the seventh day of vase life was used for culturing the fungi and bacteria in potato dextrose agar and nutrient agar medium, respectively. On the seventh day of vase life, the highest number of microbial colonies was recorded for ice-cold water spray for 45 minutes without pulsing, whereas the lowest was recorded for ice-cold water spray with DMSO pulsing. Alternaria alternata, Alternaria brassicicola, Aspergillus flavus, Acremonium sp., Drechslera spicifer (Cochliobolus spicifer), Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. oxysporum, Fusarium pallidoroseum, Streptomyces griseus and S. albus were detected in the vase water. Precooling with cold storage with or without pulsing with DMSO was beneficial in controlling microbial growth for up to 2 days, resulting in a vase life of 5 days.
