Summary

IT IS WELL ESTABLISHED THAT WHEN BACTERIAL POPULATIONS ARE SUBJECTED TO VARIOUS FORMS OF SUBLETHAL STRESS, SOME BACTERIA MAY DIE, OTHERS ARE INJURED AND THE REMAINING BACTERIA ARE APPARENTLY UNAFFECTED. THE SUBSEQUENT VIABILITY OF INJURED CELLS DEPENDS ON SEVERAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING THE COMPOSITION OF THE PLATING MEDIUM. THE PERCENT SURVIVAL OF FROZEN CELLS WAS ALWAYS HIGHER WHEN ENRICHED AGAR MEDIUM WAS EMPLOYED THAN WHEN MINIMAL MEDIUM WAS USED.
