THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE DESIGN OF A COOLING INSTALLATION FOR A 200 MELECTRON VOLTS ACCELERATOR WHERE 90% OF THE HEAT GENERATED IS REMOVED BY A WATER COOLING SYSTEM AND THE REMAINDER BY AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. 5 SEPARATE COOLING CIRCUITS EACH WITH A DESIGN LOAD OF 1,200 KILOW OPERATING ON R12 CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS WERE DESIGNED. THE OUTPUT FROM THE CHILLERS IS DIVIDED BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR COOLING CIRCUIT AND THE AIR CONDITIONING PLANT. THE FORMER IS ISOLATED FROM THE MAIN COOLING CIRCUIT BY A HEAT EXCHANGER TO AVOID RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION OF THE CHILLER CIRCUIT. DEIONISED WATER IS CIRCULATED THROUGH STAINLESS STEEL PIPES TO THE ACCELERATOR TO PREVENT ELECTROLYTIC EROSION OF THE COPPER CURRENT CONDUCTORS OF THE ACCELERATOR. G.R.S.
