Summary

DMSO is used as cryoprotectant, specially for liposomes. Its effects were often measured but the way it works was never studied. The described experiments suggest that DMSO is less active when liposomes are carrying negative charge. Based on these results, the authors suggest that the polar sulfoxide moiety of DMSO interacts electrostatically with phospholipid membranes and that this interaction is critical for DMSO's cryoprotective effect for membranes.
